Julian was born in 1970 in Ipoh, Malaysia, and is of Hakka Chinese descent. Although his parents received an English education during colonial Malaya, they chose to enroll Julian and his brothers in Chinese schools to enhance their language abilities and deepen their cultural roots. Julian discovered a talent for art and calligraphy.

After completing his O Levels in Belfast, UK, Julian pursued a Bachelor of Design (Graphic Design) at Swinburne University in Melbourne, graduating in 1996.

Working as a creative for over 25 years, he employs a diverse approach to his work that draws on his enthusiasm for calligraphy, typography, illustration and photography. Recognised for his ability to solve problems effectively using various visual tools, Julian almost always includes a hand-drawn element to his work.

He currently resides and works in Melbourne, Australia.
